The faces behind the Best Places To Work Awards: Tamsin O’Luanaigh, nDreams
Amiqus’ pro bono EDI initiative G Into Gaming has been sponsoring the brilliant Gamesindustry.biz Best Places To Work Awards for the past few years. This series of articles looks back and reflects with the winners of the G into Gaming accolades…
What did it mean to you to win the G Into Gaming Best Places to Work award?
It was incredibly surprising! There are some amazing champions of diversity, inclusion, accessibility and equality in the games industry, which only seem to be more numerous and impactful each year, so to be included was a real honour. I remember sitting in the audience and hearing the description of the winner. She sounded fantastic! It sounded like she was doing so much to try and make a difference for women in the industry and make it a more inclusive place for them to work and thrive. Then I heard my name read out and I couldn’t believe it! It came at the right time as, although no one externally was aware, I was experiencing a period of burnout and ended up taking a couple of months off around that time to recentre myself and refocus. So, it was really validating and humbling to win the award, and really helped improve my mental health at the time.
What are you most proud of achieving in your role at nDreams over the past couple of years?
The company had its 15-year anniversary last year. To be around that long, especially working exclusively in the VR space since 2013, feels like such a big achievement in this industry! I am proud of the nDreams team and all of the amazing talent who work behind the scenes (to such a high standard) to deliver our games. The recognition we have received externally through awards, such as Phantom being named E3’s Best VR Game in 2019, and several ‘Best Grad Employer Awards,’ really means a lot. Of course, we don’t do what we do for awards! Creating fun and genre defining games for our players, whilst aiming to be an industry-leading employer, is our primary focus… but the accolades are always nice and humbling! Last year we launched the nDreams Academy, which is our commitment to deliver vital outreach, close skills gaps, embrace diverse talent, and upskill our team. The programmes are off to a flying start, and it feels like everyone involved is making a real difference in making our industry more accessible and more transparent. Being able to oversee all that, and getting outstanding support from the team around me, makes me incredibly proud every day.
What have been the biggest challenges for you during the pandemic – both professionally and personally?
Supporting the mental health of the team whilst everyone has been remote has been really important. Retaining and enhancing the strong culture we have developed over time has been a key focus. We believe nDreams has a special ethos of collaboration and we really want everyone to have great opportunities when they’re with us. Personally, I have found the times we’ve gone from little to no social contact particularly difficult. I often find I feel energised by those around me, so working from home constantly didn’t suit me at all. We now offer a mix of remote, flex, and hybrid arrangements at nDreams to hopefully cater to most people’s requirements. Coordinating the policy for that and getting it right definitely took some time!
