How to Celebrate Pride Month in your Workplace
By guest contributor Kate Palmer, HR Advice and Consultancy Director at Peninsula UK
Now, more than ever before, society is fully supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community. From representation to equal opportunities, the acknowledgement is well overdue.
We are currently celebrating Pride Month, with festivities and celebrations taking place across businesses – including games studios.
If your company wants to get involved, here are some thoughts…
What is Pride Month?
Collectively around the globe, the month of June has been recognised as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. This is a celebration to commemorate queer history, and in particular, the Stonewall Uprising.
It was a turning point in history, where queer people of colour fought for equal rights for the LGBTQ community. The protest took place in Manhattan and lasted for six days – but what happened there shaped the rest of history forever.
For reference, LGBTQIA+ includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other variations. But celebrating the movement is accepting for all. It’s about inclusivity, equality, and diversity – which is how we value and build our communities.
The importance of celebrating Pride in the workplace
Throughout history, those in the LGBTQ+ community have faced struggles in both their personal and professional lives.
Some might face isolation or little support from their loved ones. Others may face verbal or physical abuse in their everyday life. When people lack a support network in their personal lives, the next place they might search for it is in the workplace.
This falls under a duty of care all employers should have for their staff. Businesses need to care for their employees’ mental and physical health. This will accentuate their morale, performance, motivation – and in the long run, the workplace equally benefits.
Many employees fear sharing their identities or pronouns, in fear of being ‘other’-ed. Some are worried these labels may be held against them; some think it could indirectly close professional development paths for them.
As a business, you need to ensure that things like these have no hold over career development, opportunities, and promotions. By building an inclusive and diverse workforce, you can provide support, praise, and make a difference in their professions.
How to celebrate Pride Month in the workplace
The games and esports sectors are arguably more diverse than in the past, but there is still much work to be done
So, here are some thoughts on how you can celebrate Pride Month in the workplace:
Get input from your employees
There’s no better way to find out information than going to the source. Here, you need to get input straight from your colleagues.
Ask your LGBTQIA+ employees and colleagues how they would like to celebrate. Why not provide an open plan for what they’d like to do. From decorating the office to planning social days – the opportunities are endless.
Get their feedback through surveys, questionnaires, and open dialogue. Ideas will build up in abundance.
Invite inspirational speakers
These days, so many of us turn to webinars and lectures for guidance and motivation.
For some, information is easily absorbed through ‘classroom’ settings. So, why not invite inspirational speakers who are active and learned in LGBTQIA+ culture?
These talks can be live presentations, where your employees are invited as audience members, or they can be available through video podcasts and online workshops.
If you’re having trouble finding the perfect speaker, speak to your own staff. They can perhaps recommend people or, if they’re willing, share their own personal stories.
Celebrate Pride this month and beyond
Remember, we have chosen the entire month of June to celebrate LGBTQIA+ cultures and traditions. But the celebrations shouldn’t stop there.
It’s important to push equality, inclusion, and diversity in the workplace – especially for the sake of under-represented groups.
We are not defined by a label or social marker. Rather, we are all individual pieces within a global jigsaw.
Be accepting of every part of the community; and celebrate our vast histories, cultures, and traditions. However you identify , wear it on your sleeve and with Pride.
